Update for the Week of 2/6

Greetings Harrison Families,

Our staff is excited to meet with you this week to share all the amazing ways your student has grown. These precious moments let us revisit goals, as well as partner by hearing from you about your hopes for your Bobcat. If your child has a 504 or TAG plan that needs annual review, please let your child’s teacher know so we can add time as needed.

Winter Family Conferences

Wednesday (2/8/23) & Thursday (2/9/23)

Please take a moment, if you haven’t already, to sign up for a conference. Our Harrison Winter Conference Landing Page will get you to all teachers in one stop. 💛

What an amazing night to celebrate reading! Thank you to all our families who came to venture through our school in search of literacy activities. Each student got to take home several gently used books and one new book from our SMART reading partners. We collected over 2000 books for our Read-cycle, ate over 35 pizzas, and had over 350 Bobcats prowling our halls.

Character Trait of the Month

For the month of January, our character trait was empathy. In our morning announcements students were reminded to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect similar and different feelings, as well as to show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels. When students can identify, understand, and respond in a caring way to how someone else is feeling, it helps create a positive and accepting school climate.

As you join us for Conferences please check out our Winter Book Fair run by our amazing Ms. Moore!

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update > City of Fort Wright, Kentucky

Announcement from our District Office

Thank you for all that you do to keep your children healthy and safe.  Covid-19 information about Lane County was released by the Center for Disease Control earlier in January.  Lane County’s current Covid-19 Community level is Medium.

The CDC recommends the following:

  • If you are at high risk of getting very sick, wear a high-quality mask or respirator (e.g., N95) when indoors in public.

  • If you have household or social contact with someone at high risk for getting very sick, consider self-testing to detect infection before contact, and consider wearing a high-quality mask when indoors with them. Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, including recommended booster doses.

  • Maintain ventilation improvements.

  • Avoid contact with people who have suspected or confirmed COVID-19.

Update for the Week of 12/16

Happy Holiday Bobcats!

💛💙See you back in our halls on Wednesday, January 4, 2023💛💙

Golden Tickets

During the two weeks before winter break Harrison staff were on the lookout for students going above and beyond being safe, respectful, responsible and ready to learn. Those few students were awarded a Golden Ticket. Golden Ticket winners came to the office to be recognized for their outstanding achievement, were greeted by our Harrison Bobcat and given a certificate to mark their achievement. Our goal was to earn 200 tickets for a school-wide cookie and milk party! Check out the current winning tickets on the wall in the cafeteria.

Reminder… Chamber Gift Certificates ARE BACK! Families can purchase these at the Chamber during break. 💛💙 Chambers gift certificates are sold in $10 increments. They spend just like cash at the businesses/restaurants that participate (listed at the bottom of the flier). The Chamber will donate $1 to Harrison Parent Club for every $10 certificate sold. This is a WIN/WIN, we help support local businesses AND get a little back. The certificates are good to use through the end of next year or from the date purchased/printed (at least a year). Have questions? Contact harrisonparentclub@gmail.com

Our character trait for the month of December was gratitude. Did you know that you can increase your happiness just by noticing and appreciating the things you have? In the morning announcements and in classrooms we have asked our Bobcats to identify things they are grateful for in their lives. Come in January to see our blue and yellow gratitude chains hanging up across the halls!

Artist in Residence

We are proud to announce that Parent Club has funded art for ALL Bobcats after the break. Karen Garibay will be leading pottery sessions for each class throughout the winter.

Roots of Empathy is back at Harrison! All Grade 4 classes will be participating to develop and enhance emotional literacy. Roots of Empathy will be facilitated by Ms. Madison, our SEL specialist. The program brings in real babies and families to study their emotional and physical developments while allowing students to reflect on strategies to support the baby as he/she develops. This real life learning is then connected to their own friendship and emotional development. For more information, check it out here.

Update for Week of 10/31

Halloween at Harrison

Fancy dress, dream career, book/movie character are just some costume ideas!!! Tomorrow our school will dress up for Halloween. Students need to bring their costumes to school in their backpacks to put their costumes on over their clothes for class parties & our school-wide parade!

Our parade will take place at 1:15. Families are welcome to line the entry halls or the gym walls. Remember to park in a spot & not in the pause parking if you attend.

COSTUMES must be…

  • School appropriate with no blood and no weapons

  • Able to be worn over clothes

  • Respectful of other cultures

We continue making sure recess is fun, safe, and inclusive for everyone. We hosted a Recess Reset for soccer, purchased a volleyball net for the field, and started a NEW student leadership opportunity. Students in grades 2nd-5th will be elected to help the recess supervisors manage equipment. Way to go leaders!

Our Character trait for November is RESPONSIBILITY. Responsibility means being dependable, making good choices, and taking accountability for your actions.  A responsible citizen looks out for the well being of others and understands we all have a part to play in making the world a better place. Talk to your child about the responsibilities they have in your family and how they can act in responsible ways in the classroom, hallway, lunchroom, and out at recess.

SMART Reading is a statewide children’s literacy nonprofit that serves kids in Oregon’s highest need schools and communities with two ingredients critical for literacy and learning success: shared reading time and access to books. Harrison wants to hear from you! We’re partnering with YouthTruth to hear what families have to say about their school experience. Help our school understand how to improve! Visit ytsurvey.org/slsdfamily22 It will take about 15 minutes.

Thank you to the 80 families who have given us your feedback. This is less than ⅓ of our families and ALL your voices are important. There is still time! Our deadline has been extended until Friday, November 4th! Thanks!

Back to School BBQ & Movie

Friday, September 30th

5:30-8:00

Please RSVP by Wed. 9/28

We’ll also host a quick optional Title 1 Annual Meeting at 5:45 in the Library. Come hear what it means to be a Title 1 school!

What are Pounce Leaders?

Student voice is critical at Harrison. Each month teachers in Grade 4 & 5 select two students to be Pounce Leaders. These students meet on Wednesdays with Principal Massie, Assistant Principal Sadiq, and our Bobcat team during recess to bring solutions to current concerns, record weekly announcements, and brainstorm ways to keep Harrison a welcoming place. This month students also performed skits for our weekly announcements on our Character Trait for September  “Being Safe”!

Update for Week of 9/12

Greetings Families,

We had an incredible first week back with our Grade 1-5 Bobcats! Thanks for sharing them with us! Students built community with get to know you activities, read stories about first day jitters, and reviewed school-wide expectations. How amazing to be back to a more normal beginning! We have a few logistics to share with you.

Arrival/Dismissal Update

Way to go families! Thanks for getting your Bobcats here and ready to learn by 8:15! This allows your student to be apart of our Morning Meetings where students share about themselves and connect as team with one another.

As we get back into the groove of dismissing nearly 500 students, please help us by either parking or arriving in the pause pick-up line much closer to 2:30 (12:30 on Wednesdays). Students come out at or just after this time. Working together we can keep Taylor clear and safe for emergency vehicles.

Parent Club Meeting & Donuts with Grownups

Join us in the library at 8:20 am for our first Parent Club Meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 20th. Stay after to chat & enjoy donuts with the Principals. We want to know more about your hopes for the year! In the coming weeks, keep an eye out for a family survey as well. 💙💛

Ms. Madison, SEL Specialist

We are very lucky to have Ms. Madison joining us as our SEL Specialists. She will support our students and families with social and emotional resources. Right now she's getting to know kids, connecting with those who want to chat, and coordinating services with community partners such as Roseburg Therapy and South Lane Mental Health. Reach out to her 541.767.5155.

Supply Fees

Thank you to those families that dropped off or sent in our $25 supply fee per student! Teachers will use this ensure students have the materials they need in class. This fee is also used to provide field trips throughout the year. We don't yet take electronic payment but you can send in checks or cash. Teachers will reach out with reminders in the coming week.
